Job Title:        Frontline Staff

Supervisor:    (Interim) Director of Engagement & Presidential Initiatives

Category:        Seasonal; part-time; non-exempt (hourly)

 

Overview: 

Frontline staff play an integral role in helping to make Rough Point Museum a welcoming, accessible, and engaging experience for members of the public with a variety of interests, backgrounds, and needs. They are enthusiastic storytellers who have strong interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and an enthusiasm for making stories accessible to the public. They will facilitate self-guided tours, work at the front desk, and assist with special programs and events. This is a part-time, seasonal position, and includes one weekend day.

 

Salary (per hour):     $17.00 per hour, 401(k) contribution (not a match), sick leave in accordance with Rhode Island Sick and Safe Leave Act, Newport oceanfront location and free on-site parking,

Anticipated Start:   March 2024

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide engaging experiences for audiences of all ages, interests, and backgrounds. Draw on a variety of interpretive/storytelling techniques to tailor content and delivery for diverse audiences.
  • Help process transactions at the front desk, including admissions and retail sales.
  • Support NRF’s public programming and other mission-related activities, including program and event preparation, set-up/take-down, and staffing.
  • Provide visitor services support at Rough Point, including friendly orientation for visitors, answer visitor questions, and address other needs as directed by NRF’s administrative staff.
  • Make a commitment to professional development by actively participating in all mandatory trainings. This includes, but is not limited to, completing assigned readings and assessments and attending training on interpretation, operations, health and safety, customer service, and other NRF needs.
  • Remain up-to-date with NRF initiatives, programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

  • Educational background in history, education, liberal arts, art history, communications, museum studies, or related field preferred but not required
  • Enthusiasm for ongoing learning in the areas of history, art and decorative arts, preservation, climate change, and the historic trades.
  • Experience working with the public, preferably in museum, educational, or customer service roles; ability to manage large groups of children and adults.
  • Excellent communications skills; can communicate effectively with folks from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences (museum visitors as well as colleagues)
  • Fluency in English, other languages a plus
  • Experience in operating point of sales systems and/or handling retail sales
  • A problem-solver; calm under pressure and challenging circumstances
  • Must participate in all mandatory trainings – including self-evaluation assessments and evaluation by NRF administrative staff.
  • The frontline staff role involves circulating throughout the museum spaces and periods of time spent standing (up to 60 minutes at a time).
  • Must be willing to work some evenings
