About Matriarch: Matriarch is a woman-owned boutique on Lower Thames St. in Newport that serves as the brick & mortar flagship for Overseasoned, a culinary empowerment brand. It specializes in all things foodie, feminist! Stop by to pick up a gift, card, book or something from our apparel collections.
About Rough Point: Rough Point was the Newport home of preservationist, collector, and philanthropist Doris Duke (1912-1993). Today, visitors can explore the house, the fine and decorative arts and fashion collections, and a historic, Olmsted-legacy landscape with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1968 by Doris Duke to “preserve and restore” the architectural and cultural heritage of Newport, today the Newport Restoration Foundation cares for over 80 historic sites—including 70 historic homes that are lived in by Tenant Stewards, as well as the Vernon House and Rough Point Museum.

Enjoy the beautiful and organically-maintained grounds at Doris Duke’s Rough Point while you work in the garden and learn the basics of growing, harvesting, preserving and preparing a variety of different foods. We will work with classic produce such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and culinary herbs, as well as unique plants, medicinal herbs, and edible flowers. The exact plants and preparations will vary based on what is in season. Discover how to identify and stock your pantry with nutritious food that will last all year long, and leave with preserved and fresh food in hand for your personal use.
This workshop takes place rain or shine and is family-friendly.

Roses are in season! Enjoy the beautiful and organically maintained gardens and grounds at Rough Point while learning about the culinary and medicinal uses of everything Rose.
We will walk the perimeter of the property gathering wild and deliciously scented rosa rugosa, while learning how to identify, preserve and use a variety of plants in the rose family. Together, we will make a few simple recipes that you can replicate at home. Additionally, each participant will bring home their own small jar of what was made during the class, as well as recipe cards.
