Become a Rising Practitioner

 Thanks to the generosity of the Southeastern New England Charitable and Educational Foundation, three students will have the opportunity to attend the symposium and be paired with a local mentor  in the field of preservation, architecture, city planning, climate science, and/or related field. 

Participation Requirements:

• Attend all days of the Symposium, including the opening reception
• Meet with mentor up to three times before, during, and/or after Symposium
• Capture the Symposium experience via social media
• Participate in at least one video/media interview
• Generate written content for KHAW website in coordination with Director of Engagement

Eligibility:

• Undergraduate or graduate student studying historic preservation, architecture, city planning, site management, climate science, and/or related fields and  reside in or attend school in Rhode Island or New London County and be U.S. citizens.

How to Apply:

• Send a letter of interest to KHAW2026@newportrestoration.org by 5pm on October 2, 2026. The letter of interest should be no longer than 250 words and address the following questions:
  • Why are you interested in attending the KHAW Symposium?
  • Why are you interested in the mentorship program?
  • What coursework and/or professional experiences have you had related to climate change and cultural heritage?
  • How would attending the Symposium advance your studies and/or career?

Keeping History Above Water: Looking Back, Moving Forward sessions will share current barriers and opportunities, messaging and community involvement, and project impact results, and feature representatives from World Monuments Fund, Stone Living Lab, Strawbery Banke Museum, the Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Wednesday evening will feature a keynote presented by Elizabeth Rush, author of Pulitzer prize-finalist Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore, followed by a reception.

Sessions will be eligible for credits with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA CES). Certificates of attendance will be provided to attendees seeking credits, and completion of the program will be reported to the AIA CES for AIA members. The accreditation process is generously provided by the Historic Preservation Education Foundation.

Thursday & Friday • Sessions: 9:15am-3:15pm • Offsite sessions: 3:30pm
