Preservation in practice

Our in-house crew is responsible for maintaining and restoring our portfolio of Preservation Properties.

Painters

The preservation paint crew is responsible for the cyclical maintenance of the preservation properties: they use traditional methods to repair plaster and to paint.

There are over 150 paint colors used in the preservation houses—many of the paint colors reflect evidence of early paint layers found during the initial period of restoration, and others were chosen based on what was considered period-appropriate

Field Carpenters

Field carpenters are a vital part of the preservation of our collection of preservation properties. Carpenters repair and restore damage to the wooden structures, flooring, interior wood paneling, and clapboard siding. Unlike other forms of carpentry, the NRF carpentry team works to preserve as much historic material as possible.

Mill Work

Some of the crew are based at the NRF Mill where they restore windows and doors, make and repair protective storm windows, restore and repair decorative wood panels and mantles, and much more. The mill crew utilizes specialized tools–there are 487 custom knives to match every possible decorative molding found in a NRF house–and combines traditional joinery techniques with 21st-century best practices.
