SUMMARY:Quest: Puddingstone Festival II
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to partner with Puddingstone Festival on an evening of music at Rough Point! Our founder Doris Duke was a supporter of the arts\, as well as a musician and a dancer. We are delighted to host this evening celebrating the performing arts in her home. \nEmbark on a musical journey at Rough Point\, where the spirit of musical exploration and discovery is brought to life through a colorful program of chamber music. “Quest” invites listeners to experience the creative quest of composers across centuries and\ncontinents.\nPuddingstone founder and pianist Clemens Teufel joins violinist Andrea Segar to open the program with Mozart’s Violin Sonata in E minor. One of only two violin sonatas Mozart composed in a minor key\, this work reveals the composer’s search for new expressive possibilities through its lyricism and emotional depth. The program continues with Lili Boulanger’s Two Pieces for Violin and Piano\, offering a glimpse into the composer’s unique voice and her own artistic journey. These evocative miniatures highlight Boulanger’s sensitivity and innovation\, enriching the evening’s exploration.\nContemporary perspectives come to the fore with Vanished Voices by Takuma Itoh\, a work that reflects on memory and presence\, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Dan van Hassel\, which challenges performers and listeners alike with its inventive textures and bold narrative.\nThe quest culminates with Beethoven’s monumental “Archduke” Trio\, performed by pianist Angela Kim\, violinist Clara Kim\, and cellist Rafael Popper-Keizer. Dedicated to his patron Archduke Rudolph\, this iconic trio stands as a testament to Beethoven’s\nrelentless pursuit of artistic grandeur\, guiding listeners through a sweeping musical journey from the noble opening movement to the exuberant finale. \nPurchase your tickets here. \n  \n\nAbout Puddingstone Festival: \nPuddingstone Festival are a group of passionate music lovers and artistic entrepreneurs\, united by a shared love for the arts. Their team brings together a rich diversity of perspectives\, with board members hailing from various professions and backgrounds. Some are local to the area (yes\, real island natives)\, others come from different parts of the country\, and their founder is from Europe—each of them contributing a unique set of skills and experiences. \nWhat unites them is the strong commitment to promoting the arts\, connecting with the community\, and supporting its growth and well-being.

SUMMARY:Community Book Event: A House Restored by Lee McColgan
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with our friends at Charter Books\, join us for a community book discussion with author Lee McColgan\, who will speak about and sign his new book\, A House Restored— a lyrical\, meditative memoir about his journey through restoring the Loring House\, built in 1702 in Pembroke\, Massachusetts. \nDoors open at 5:30 PM for you to explore the Museum\, and the talk begins at 6:00 PM. \nThis FREE event is open to all\, but please register here in advance. \nTo purchase your copy of A House Restored from locally-owned bookstore Charter Books\, please use this link: https://www.charterbookstore.com/book/9781682688366 \nAbout A House Restored:\nShop Class as Soulcraft meets A Place of My Own in this lyrical meditation of a woodworker steadfastly repairing a historic home.\nOld houses share their secrets only if they survive. Trading the corporate ladder for a stepladder\, Lee McColgan commits to preserving the ramshackle Loring House\, built in 1702\, using period materials and methods and on a holiday deadline. But his enchantment withers as he discovers the massive repairs it needs. A small kitchen fix reveals that the structure’s rotten frame could collapse at any moment. In a bathroom\, mold appears and spreads. He fights deteriorating bricks\, frozen pipes\, shattered windows\, a punctured foundation\, and even an airborne chimney cap while learning from a diverse cast of preservationists\, including a master mason named Irons\, a stone whisperer\, and the Window Witch. But can he meet his deadline before family and friends arrive\, or will it all come crashing down? McColgan’s journey expertly examines our relationship to history through the homes we inhabit\, beautifully articulating the philosophy of preserving the past to find purpose for the future. \nAbout Lee McColgan:\nLee McColgan has worked on Boston’s Old North Church\, Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House\, and other buildings. His work has appeared in Architectural Digest\, Boston Globe\, and Wall Street Journal. He lives with his wife in the Loring House in Pembroke\, Massachusetts. \nAbout our partner\, Charter Books:\nFounded in 2020\, Charter Books is a Newport-based business whose mission is to cultivate community and a robust local culture through a broad selection of books\, programming\, and the free exchange of ideas.
