DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be a partner of this year’s French in Newport community day! Join us at the Vernon House and throughout the City to celebrate the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution. \nOn July 11\, 1780 the French Allied Forces\, led by Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, comte de Rochambeau\, arrived in Newport. On July 11\, 2026 step into Revolutionary-era Newport for a day of living history\, performances\, demonstrations\, and hands-on activities commemorating the arrival of General Rochambeau and the French forces in 1780. Programs will take place throughout Washington Square\, with trolley service at key locations.\nFeatured throughout the day: The French Military Band will perform at both the beginning and end of the day’s programs\, and the Kentish Guards Fife & Drum Corps will perform every hour for 25 minutes beginning at 11:30 a.m. The National Park Service and the Daughters of the American Revolution\, Battle of Rhode Island Chapter\, will also be on site throughout the day. \nMake sure you visit the Vernon House and get your activity passport stamped! DESCRIPTION:Trinity Church in collaboration with the Newport Restoration Foundation invite you to a celebration of Queen Anne Square’s 50th anniversary. \nBeginning in 1969\, Trinity Church and the Newport Restoration Foundation worked closely with the Newport Redevelopment Agency to create a “square recalling the best of the nation’s colonial past for the inspiration of present and future generations.” The square was dedicated to the public in July of 1976 by Queen Elizabeth II and has remained an important communal space for public gathering and memory. \nJoin us for a conversation with a panelist of historians\, scholars\, and preservation leaders to reflect on the legacy of Queen Anne Square and the impact of the mid-century preservation movement on the city of Newport—and the United States. \nA reception with light refreshments and jazz music presented by Puddingstone featuring  the Alan Bernstein Quartet will follow the discussion. \nWhile this program is free and open to all\, we ask that you kindly rsvp here \nThis program is part of Trinity Church’s 300th anniversary celebrations and is a Newport250 event\, commemorating the story of our nation. \nMeet the panelists: \n Rebecca Bertrand\, Executive Director of the Newport Historical Society.   \nRebecca Bertrand serves as Executive Director of the Newport Historical Society\, where she preserves and celebrates the rich history of Newport\, Rhode Island. \nAs the organization’s chief executive\, Bertrand oversees the stewardship of a collection of centuries-old historic landmarks\, including the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House (c.1697)\, the Great Friends Meeting House (c. 1699) and the Colony House (c. 1739). In this role\, she leads the curation of engaging exhibitions for visitors of every age and interest. Under her leadership\, the NHS has developed nationally recognized\, innovative public programs that bring Newport’s people\, places\, and consequential moments to life for diverse audiences\, and manages the Society’s robust collection of over 500 years’ worth of artifacts\, documents\, and photographs. \nBertrand is a strong advocate for historic preservation beyond Newport\, as well. She is a board chair of Preserve Rhode Island\, where she contributes her expertise to advance the preservation of the state’s rich cultural heritage. She also sits on the Rhode Island 250 Commission and is the Treasurer of Discover Newport. \nBertrand holds a Master of Arts from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture from the University of Delaware and a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural & Historic Preservation from Salve Regina University. \n Trudy Coxe\, CEO & Executive Director of the Preservation Society of Newport County \nTrudy Coxe serves as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of The Preservation Society of Newport County\, a position she has held since December 1998. Under her stewardship\, the society has evolved into Rhode Island’s largest cultural organization\, overseeing 11 architecturally and historically significant properties\, seven of which are designated National Historic Landmarks. The society’s accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums underscores its national stature and institutional rigor. \nCoxe’s professional career reflects a dynamic integration of environmental advocacy\, public administration and historic preservation. Prior to her current role\, she served as Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs for six years and led Rhode Island’s Save The Bay for more than a decade\, transforming it into the largest citizen-led environmental organization in New England. \nHer leadership has consistently advanced institutional growth\, fostered public trust and prompted critical discourse about how heritage stewardship can coexist with environmental innovation and contemporary development. Her contributions have been recognized by numerous accolades\, including the 2006 Award of Excellence from the National Garden Clubs in recognition of her lifelong environmental advocacy; the 2011 Business Women Award for Career Achievement from Providence Business News and\, most recently\, the 2023 “Greatest Living Rhode Islanders” recognition by GoLocalProv\, a testament to her enduring influence on the civic and cultural fabric of the state she calls home. \n Keith Stokes\, Rhode Island Historian Laureate \nThroughout his four decades of public service in Rhode Island\, Keith W. Stokes has remained dedicated to building a community that welcomes everyone who calls the Ocean State home. He has served in various roles\, including as an elected official in his cherished hometown of Newport and as a gubernatorial appointee focused on economic development. Additionally\, he has contributed to the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island\, leading business development efforts. \nKeith earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and completed his graduate studies in public policy at the University of Chicago. His education is enriched by the stories of his ancestors\, who have shared long-held narratives from a time before the American Revolution\, providing him with a unique perspective on the present. \nKeith is presently Director of the State of Rhode Island Division of Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion. He has also been an Advisor for Rhode Island with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and served on numerous local\, regional\, and national business and public boards\, including Preservation Society for Newport County\, Touro Synagogue Foundation\, Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission Historical Review Board\, Rhode Island Black Heritage Society\, Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation\, Quonset Development Corporation\, Rhode Island Foundation\, and the American Antiquarian Society. \nHe frequently appears on national historical programs\, including C-SPAN\, Fox News Legends & Lies\, and Ted Talk.  He was the lead researcher and author of the publication “A Matter of Truth\,” which examined and documented the roles of the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island in supporting a “Separate and Unequal” existence for African heritage\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. DESCRIPTION:July 10th is Newport’s honorary Preservation Day. \n Join us and our friends The Preservation Society of Newport County on a tour celebrating Preservation in one of the country’s most intact Revolutionary-era communities. We’ll explore historic Easton’s Point and see how the neighborhood is adapting to the increasing impacts of sea level rise and flooding events. The tour begins with a walk highlighting resiliency planning for NRF’s historic homes\, many which witnessed the American Revolution\, and concludes with a special behind-the-scenes look at the resiliency study of Hunter House\, one of the finest examples of Georgian Colonial architecture from the mid-18th century. \nWhile this tour is free\, tickets are limited and we recommend that you register in advance here. \nThe tour will run at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. \nKnow before you go: This tour begins at the corner of Bridge and Third Streets and takes place rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Rough Point’s new arboretum certification status\, we will be hosting a series of programs that share our resiliency work and showcase the historic landscape. \nIn partnership with our friends at Aquidneck Resilience\, join us on this interactive talk with “Tree Whisperers” Dr. Jim Conroy and Basia Alexander. \nRough Point is a coastal historic landscape with more than 200 trees—many of which are resilient but vulnerable to the impacts of the harsh (and changing) climate conditions of the site. Conroy and Alexander’s mindful methods rejuvenate vitality and balance in ecosystems. We are delighted to host this evening celebrating the performing arts in her home. \nOn January 27\, three piano trios spanning the breadth of the Romantic era will perform at Rough Point: Beethoven’s “Ghost” Trio (Op. 70 No. 1)\, renowned for its haunting Largo movement that evokes a spectral mystery—a nickname coined in the 19th century to capture its otherworldly atmosphere; Cécile Chaminade’s Piano Trio No. 2 (Op. 34)\, a lyrical gem from a pioneering woman composer of the late 19th century; and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 1 (Op. 8)\, a single-movement “Poème” composed at age 19\, unfolding with poignant poetic introspection. \nWe are honored to present the internationally celebrated Sitkovetsky Trio who will be performing these exquisite works for us. Known as one of today’s foremost piano trios\, their thoughtful and committed interpretations have earned them critical acclaim and invitations to prestigious venues worldwide\, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, Frankfurt Alte Oper\, Palais des Beaux-Arts\, Musée du Louvre\, L’Auditori Barcelona\, Wigmore Hall\, and Lincoln Center in New York. \nFrom Beethoven’s early Romantic heroism\, through Chaminade’s elegant middle-period lyricism\, to Shostakovich’s late-Romantic modernism\, these works trace the rich evolution of musical Romanticism and the art of musical poetry across generations. \nActor Nora Eschenbacher will enrich the evening by reading period letters related to the music\, weaving an evocative literary thread through the performance. One of only two violin sonatas Mozart composed in a minor key\, this work reveals the composer’s search for new expressive possibilities through its lyricism and emotional depth. The program continues with Lili Boulanger’s Two Pieces for Violin and Piano\, offering a glimpse into the composer’s unique voice and her own artistic journey. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to partner with Puddingstone Festival on an evening of music and dance at Rough Point! Our founder Doris Duke was a supporter of the arts\, as well as a musician and a dancer. We are delighted to host this evening celebrating the performing arts in her home. \nThe concert will feature Arlen Hlusko\, Grammy Award-winning cellist from Canada\, alongside Frankie Car\, British-American cellist\, both esteemed members of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect. They will be joined by Clemens Teufel\, German pianist and founder of Puddingstone. The program features a rich array of works\, including Beethoven’s Cello Sonata Op. 5 No. 2\, followed by Schumann’s Fantasy\, Op. 73\, originally written for clarinet and here arranged for cello. Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violinswill be reimagined for two cellos\, and Alban Berg’s Sieben Frühe Lieder\, arranged for cello\, will bring a lyrical\, turn-of-the-century avant-garde touch to the evening. Throughout the performance\, Rhea Keller and Katie Moorhead\, renowned and beloved dancers who have both previously been presented by Newport Contemporary Ballet\, will bring their graceful and expressive movement to select pieces of the program\, further elevating the experience.
