Workshop: Lead Safe Wood Window Restoration for Historic Properties

Windows are some of the most character-defining features of historic buildings. Rhode Island is home to many properties with historic wood windows that make up the fabric of our rich architectural heritage. The state now has some of the most comprehensive lead-safety laws in the country, particularly for rental properties.

This workshop teaches experienced contractors and landlords who manage historic properties on several techniques for the safe, continued use of historic windows rather than resorting to removal and disposal. Because most local contractors do not specialize in historic preservation, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to develop a specialized skillset.

What You Will Learn

This workshop is to teach the means and methods of how to safely remove lead hazards from windows for safe continued operation.

.

Participants will learn to:

  • Understand Rhode Island Lead Safe Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rules
  • Identify lead windows using proper lead tests
  • Create safe workspaces to perform work
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Perform safe removal of lead windows for restoration
  • Execute lead-safe window tactics and techniques for restoring wood windows as outlined in the forthcoming Lead Paint Adaptation and Remediation Strategies for Historic Windows
  • Understand how each tactic either safely removes or mitigates the lead hazard of the window component
  • Reinstall  windows with lead hazards removed

    What To Expect

    • Participants will test windows, remove windows, and complete lead-removal practices on a historic property where wood windows are installed. For ease of teaching and participant safety, all demonstration windows have been tested free of lead paint.
    • Attendees will receive a copy of the forthcoming Lead Paint Adaptation and Remediation Strategies for Historic Windows; a collaboration between the Office of Planning and Economic Development for the City of Newport, RI and the Newport Restoration Foundation in partnership with Heritage Restoration.
    • Participants will receive a certificate of program completion in Lead-Based Paint Window Restoration from NRF as well as 20 hours towards a Preservation Trades Apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, or professional development.
    • The workshop will be held outside, regardless of weather.
    • This workshop requires the wearing of PPE, including N95 masks. PPE equipment and tools will be provided.
    • Ability to stand or crouch for 5-6 hours is required due to the physical requirements of the workshop.

Please note: This workshop focuses on the techniques used to remove lead hazards from wood windows. All lead work in Rhode Island is regulated and governed by the Lead Safe Work Practices Rules and Regulations. Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) work can only be performed by a Licensed Lead Renovation Firm. This workshop is not a Lead Renovator (RRP) certification program (RI 216-RICR-50-15-11). To be considered “lead safe,” windows should always be tested by a RI licensed lead inspector. NRF cannot guarantee that the application of these techniques will result in a passed lead inspection. For more information, please consult the Rhode Island Department of Health.
