Landscape History & Garden Tour at Rough Point
Sunday, August 21, 2011 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pmGet Directions » to Rough Point
Come experience August in the Rough Point gardens. Butterflies abound, the vegetables are ripe, and dahlias in full bloom (one of Doris Duke's favorite flowers). The tour traces Newport's development as a premier vacation spot as reflected in its landscape, going back 250 years to when this part of Newport was farmland, to the earliest summer cottages, to the more formal estates built by America's wealthiest families. Learn about the distinguished design history of this landscape, first created in the 1890s by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, while enjoying exquisite gardens and breathtaking views. (Participants will receive garden-inspired recipes from Doris Duke's Rough Point archives.)
Space is limited. Book tickets online or contact Liz for reservations, (401) 846-4152 or liz@newportrestoration.org
