The Economical Historic Home: Energy Efficiency Basics for the Old House Owner
Saturday, September 26, 2009 | 9:00 am - 12:45 pmHow to care for your old house, protect Rhode Island's heritage, and help save the planet!
Enhancing the energy performance of an older home doesn't require spending lots of money on cutting-edge furnaces, pricy replacement windows, or the latest insulation. Old-time Yankee frugality makes sense in this economic climate and can guide our decisions about how to make an old house more "green," saving money and energy without damaging its historic character.
The Philip Walker House (c. 1724) in East Providence (432 Massasoit Ave.), one of the oldest houses in RI and recently upgraded for energy efficiency, is the setting for this hands-on workshop providing basic information on how to "green up" your historic home. Experts will present information and demonstrations on:
• insulation
• assessing & weatherizing the building envelope (walls, doors, roof, etc.)
• wood window repair and restoration,
• heating and cooling systems,
• retrofitting for renewable energy,
• tax credits and funding sources
Bring your questions about how to reduce energy consumption without harming either your budget or historic home.
Presented by Preserve Rhode Island, Historic New England, Newport Restoration Foundation, and Providence Revolving Fund four of Rhode Island's most experienced preservation organizations.
