Garden to Table: Sugar and Spice at Whitehorne House
Tuesday, August 11, 2009 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmGet Directions » to Whitehorne House
Savor flavors inspired by the maritime world of the 1800s. Samuel Whitehorne traded goods such as rum, gin, spices, and chocolate while his wife Elizabeth turned these ingredients into sweet desserts (found in her hand-written recipe book). Their backyard had fruit trees, now a beautiful garden setting where you will enjoy an array of gelati from Cold Fusion inspired by fruits of the garden and flavors from around the globe. Asterisk will provide a variety of cocktail concoctions that evoke Newport's historic involvement in the rum trade. The first floor of the house will also be open for self-guided tours.
Gelato Menu
Zanzibar Chocolate (featuring ginger, cinnamon and mace)
Blueberry Lavender
Cinnamon Basil Mascarpone
Black Current Sorbet
Rum Cocktails
Experience and learn about a variety of rums to discover the great diversity of this liquor, from dark to light to one as smooth as cognac.
This event is part of a series of three Garden to Table programs held at NRF's historic sites. Each evening begins with a short guided stroll through the garden where you will learn about gardening techniques and traditional foods. Then enjoy wonderful food and drink prepared by renowned local chefs and inspired by flavors of the past.
