February 16, 2011 View more Press ReleasesThe Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) announced that it will distribute more than $40,000 in grants from the Doris Duke Fund for Historic Preservation in 2011. Funds were raised at the fourth annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards, which recognizes achievements in preservation in the city of Newport. Grant recipients are the City of Newport for restoration of the Old Stone Mill; Emmanuel Church for conservation of a wall mural; Newport Art Museum for front entry work; Newport Historical Society for repairs to Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House; Redwood Library for fence repairs; Rose Island Lighthouse for restoration of the stone bastion; St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth for slate roofing and flashing; and Trinity Church for interior painting.
"I am delighted to see the growth of our event and the grant fund which it benefits," commented Pieter N. Roos, NRF's executive director. "It is truly a testament to the strong support for and appreciation of historic preservation within our community. It is vital that we work together to preserve Newport's historical assets - they not only represent our past, but our future too."
The Doris Duke Fund for Historic Preservation distributes grants to civic and non-profit organizations on Aquidneck Island and in Jamestown. Administered by the NRF, these grants are generally given for bricks-and-mortar projects or project planning. The grant recipients are selected by a peer committee and NRF's Board of Trustees.
Each year, the Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards honors individual home owners, non-profit organizations, or local businesses for their contributions to historic preservation in Newport. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 awards. The review committee, comprised of representatives from the City of Newport, NRF staff and other preservation professionals, encourages the submission of a wide variety of project types, from small to large buildings, landscapes or streetscapes, education or advocacy projects, sustainable "green building" preservation, or projects showcasing craftsmanship/artisanship. Nominations are due by April 29, 2011. Download a nomination form at NewportRestoration.org or contact Lisa Dady at (401) 324-6090.
