Volunteers Needed for Sewing Project at Rough Point
February 14, 2012 View more NewsThe Newport Restoration Foundation is seeking experienced hand stitchers with an interest in historic textiles to volunteer for an exciting new project at Rough Point, Doris Duke's Newport estate.
A 17th-century Italian silk velvet applique valance, which normally hangs in the Dining Room at Rough Point, needs to be replaced. A reproduction is being made by volunteers who are donating their time to cutting and sewing over 1000 pieces of velvet to a new background. The many benefits of volunteering include: your signature stitched on the reproduction for posterity; the chance to work closely with conservation professionals and colleagues interested in sewing, art and history; new learning; and the satisfaction of contributing to a non-profit's effort to preserve and present its art collection. More information is attached.
Those interested in participating should complete the attached Volunteer Contact Form and join us at our next preview meeting on Tuesday, February 28th, 10:00 to 11:30 am at Rough Point, 680 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. This is a chance to see the valance project, ask questions and learn more about the Volunteer in Partnership program. Please submit the form and RSVP by February 24 to:
